Quick facts
Duration:18 Days / 17 Nights
Type:Friends & Family
Grade:4 & 5 Star
Start:Honolulu Airport
Finish:Kahului Airport

Day 1: Arrive into Oahu
Aloha and welcome to Hawaii! Upon arrival at the Honolulu International Airport, you will be met with traditional flower lei, assisted through baggage claim and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to explore this fascinating city within a city, Waikiki.

Day 2: Island of Oahu
This morning we invite you to come to one of our hospitality desks to discuss the many exciting things to do and see on Oahu. Later, you will pick up your Alamo Rental car to begin your journey. We suggest an easy drive around the eastern side of Oahu to view Diamond Head, the Kahala residential district – our very own Beverly Hills, Hanauma Bay, Waimanalo and Nuuanu Pali Lookout. Optional stop at Sea Life Park for a fabulous introduction to the many colourful fishes, dolphins, seals, sharks and whales that inhabit the Ocean. (B)

Day 3: Pearl Harbor | North Shore
Today we suggest a mid-morning drive around to the north side of the island, stopping at the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. During this historical stop you can even go aboard the USS Missouri, the battleship upon which the treaty ending World War II was signed. Continuing through the centre of the island will take you to the north shore sights and as you loop around the island a suggested stop is the Polynesian Cultural Center, the largest living historical display of Polynesia in the world. (B)

Day 4: Depart Oahu, Fly to Kauai, Lihue
Return your rental car to Honolulu Airport. Board your inter-island flight from Honolulu Airport to Lihue Airport on the Eastern side of Kauai. Pick up your rental car and drive the short distance to your hotel located on the east shore.

Day 5: West Side – Hanapepe Town, Waimea Canyon
Off the beaten track you’ll find the West Side home to a few of Kauai’s most historic places and scenic wonders, the most famous of which is the breath taking Waimea Canyon, the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. But there is even more to explore. Head north beyond the gorges and cliffs of Waimea Canyon and visit Kokee State Park where you’ll find yet another amazing view from the Kalalau Lookout. The two small towns of Waimea and Hanapepe also grace the West Side. In 1778, Captain Cook first landed in the Hawaiian Islands here at Waimea Bay. Today, a statue of Cook stands in Waimea Town commemorating this event. Hanapepe is the art capital of Kauai with galleries, shops and eateries lining small town Hanapepe Road. Optional: return for a mid-day ride up the Wailua River to the “Fern Grotto”.

Day 6: North Shore – Hanalei Town, Kilauea Lighthouse, Napali Coast
Begin your journey on the island’s northernmost point. Historic Kilauea Lighthouse is a wildlife sanctuary and a scenic spot for whale watching during December to April. Visit lovely Hanalei Town, home to stretches of green taro fields alongside colourful shops, galleries and restaurants. You’ll also find some of Kauai’s best beaches here, including Lumahai Beach, the setting for the film “South Pacific”, and Kee Beach, ideal for sunbathing. You can also learn about native plants and see scenic ocean views at Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens or at the 7-hectare Limahuli Gardens, part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. However the most stunning feature of Kauai’s North Shore is the magnificent Napali Coast. This 27-kilometre stretch of coastline is lined with cliffs over 900 metres tall, accented with lush green valleys, cascading waterfalls and sea caves. Inaccessible by car, you can hike or take an air or boat tour to view this breath taking natural wonder.

Day 7: Day at Leisure | Helicopter Flight (additional cost)
This morning an absolutely magnificent way to see Kauai is via a helicopter excursion around the island to the Na Pali coastline (additional cost) and comes highly recommended.

Day 8: Depart Kauai, Fly to Hawaii, Kona
Return your rental car to Lihue Airport. Board you inter-island flight in the afternoon from Lihue Airport to Kona Airport on the Western side of the island of Hawaii. A lazy drive south through the fishing village of Kailua might extend on to the City of Refuge or ‘place of shelter’ before your evening meal, perhaps in Kailua before heading north to your hotel.

Day 9: Kona – via Kau to Volcanoes National Park – Kona (333 km / 207miles~)
Get up early and head south via the region of Kau to Volcanoes National Park. The 152 kilometre (95 miles) drive takes around 3 hours one-way with sightseeing stops on-route. Vast, rural and remote, Hawaii Island’s southernmost region, Kau, seems almost untouched by civilisation except around the small communities of Naalehu and Pahala. Start at Punaluu Black Sand Beach one of Hawaii’s most well-known black sand beaches. In the upcountry Kau Desert within the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park you’ll find the footprints of ancient warriors trapped in volcanic ash, a result of one of Kilauea’s rare explosive eruptions.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, this is a place of natural wonders where you can witness the growth of the island right before your eyes. Begin your visit at the Kilauea Visitor Center where you can watch an hourly film to introduce you to the park. Ranger talks are offered and ranger-guided activities can be scheduled. Pick up maps, learn about the park’s hikes and get the latest eruption updates here. Crater Rim Drive is the 17-kilometre (11 miles) drive that circles Kilauea Caldera. Driving around this loop will take you to the park’s main attractions: the Kilauea overlook, Jaggar Museum, Halemaumau Crater, Devastation Trail, Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook and the Thurston Lava Tube.

~ Approx. round-trip km/miles including Crater Rim Drive.

Questions: Will I see lava flowing? Want more time to explore? Too much driving? – Refer to the Info & Extras Tab.

Day 10: Kohala & North Kohala Coast or Day at Leisure
Drive 20 minutes north of Kona International Airport and you’ll marvel at the rugged lava fields surrounding you. Nestled amongst the jet-black and rust-red lava rock fields, a result of eruptions from Hualalai volcano centuries ago, are green oases full of world-class accommodation, fine dining and some of Hawaii’s best golf courses. With less than 230 millimetres of annual rainfall on the eight outstanding resorts here, you can soak in the sun and relax at Hapuna Beach State Park, one of the Big Island’s largest white sand beaches, or indulge in a taste of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, or recharge at some of the island’s best spas.

Heading further North you’ll notice the dramatic change in your surroundings from dazzling resorts, golf courses and lava landscapes of the Kohala Coast to lush, undeveloped pastoral lands. The charming town of Hawi and the amazing Pololu Valley Overlook, this is also the home of some of the most historically significant sites on the Big Island, from Puukohola Heiau to King Kamehameha’s birthplace. Just before Puukohola Heiau, turn east up Kawaihae Road to explore the cool scenic fields of Waimea. This upcountry area is paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) country, full of green pastures and panoramic views. Visit Kahua Ranch to take a horse riding tour or ATV drive and explore this lovely landscape while you learn about Hawaii’s ranching past. Take the scenic drive through the northernmost tip of Hawaii’s Big Island and enjoy an unforgettable journey off the beaten track.

Day 11: Day at Leisure
This morning should be spent partaking in one of the many water activities in Kona. You may wish to try a snorkelling excursion to historical Kealakekua Bay or the Atlantis Submarine ride. There is also excellent deep-sea fishing and scuba diving. Perhaps, a round of optional golf and shopping are also available for you to enjoy.

Day 12: Depart Hawaii. Fly to Maui, Kahului
Return your rental car to Kona Airport. Board you inter-island flight in the afternoon from Kona Airport to Kahului Airport on Maui. Drive the 30 scenic miles to the resort area of Kaanapali on the west coast.

Day 13: West Maui
West Maui is home to amazing resorts, shopping, restaurants and a wealth of activities. Spend the day beach hopping through Kapalua and Kaanapali before snorkelling or scuba diving at Honolua Bay. You’ll want to be in Lahaina before dark so you can spend some time exploring the historic whaling town before choosing a restaurant for a sunset dinner.

Day 14: Haleakala National Park and North Shore or Day at Leisure
Get up early and head for the summit of Haleakala – possibly to see the sunrise but bring water, sun-cream and warm clothing. The long, winding road takes some time to drive up, but is well worth the effort. Spend a couple of hours exploring the various lookout points. Stop in Makawoa home of the Hawaiian cowboy, or paniolo and meander through the eclectic shops, boutiques and art galleries. Further downhill you’ll discover the historic town of Paia on Maui’s north shore. Grab a fish burger at the popular Paia Fish market, then head to Hookipa Beach, the “windsurfing capital of the world”. (B)

Day 15: Day at Leisure

Day 16: Island of Maui – The Road to Hana
Start your drive along the legendary road to Hana only 83 kilometres from Kahului, however the drive can take anywhere from two to four hours to complete since it consists of narrow one-lane bridges, hairpin turns and incredible island views. The Hana Highway (HI-360) has 620 curves and 59 bridges. The road leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools and dramatic seascapes. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the lovely views, so get an early start and take your time on your drive.
