The tour begins as soon as you are picked up from your accommodation by the birdman—George Mateariki, a man with a vast wealth of knowledge of the Atiuan ecosystem. Birdman George is employed by Takitumu Conservation Area to look after the Rarotonga Flycatchers (Kakerori) transferred to Atiu in the years 2001-2003, as part of the recovery programme for an endangered bird that was reduced to 29 birds on Rarotonga in 1992 due to the ship rat attacks of the birds on Rarotonga. There are no ship rats on Atiu and George is employed to trap rats at the island entry points and to monitor the Kakerori. Twenty-seven of the endangered Rimatara lorikeets were reintroduced to Atiu in 2007. They too are successfully breeding. Birdman George offers to show you these birds and all the other birds of Atiu in his Eco-tour. He attracts the birds by making bird noises they recognise and subsequently gather together.
